DIY Hogwarts Themed Party - Enchanted Ceiling



The enchanted ceiling is by far what I got complimented on the most at my party, especially the floating candles.


Harry had never even imagined such a strange and splendid place. It was lit by thousands and thousands of candles that we floating in midair over four long tables ... Mainly to avoid al the starting eyes, Harry looked upward and saw a velvety clack ceiling dotted with starts. He heard Hermione whisper, "It's bewitched to look like the sky outside. I read about it in Hogwarts, A History." (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, 116-117) 

The night's sky on the ceiling was a bit tricky to pull off, and I'm sure we could've done a better job of getting more of the ceiling covered if I had more time to fool around with the projector. We had recently bought a projector from Amazon and what better way to use it than for my party? Using this video from Youtube and zooming in a bit, you have a night's sky. Simply set up the projector up at an angle so it will project on the ceiling.

The candles were actually quite easy, just time consuming.

First, get all the empty toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls from around your house. You might need to save them up for a while. Paint the inside and the outside white.

Then using some LED tea light candles you can purchase online, hot glued them in at the top end of each roll. The bottom end of the rolls needed to remain open so you can access the switch at the bottom of tea light.  Once the light is in place, add hot glue dribbles down the sides to make it look more like a real wax candle.

Hanging the candles is done by poking two holes on each side of the roll, about an inch down. Then using approximately 30 inches of clear fishing line, place each end through the holes, pull it down out the bottom of the roll, tie a knot, and this creates a large loop. After it is knotted, pull the fishing line back up and tie a knot as close to the wick of the candle as possible. This prevents the candle from tilting too much since it is top heavy. Use the remaining fishing line loop to wrap around a push pin and place in the ceiling.

DIY Hogwarts Themed Party - Platform 9 3/4



Themed parties always need a good photo station. And what makes a better station than King's Cross Station, Platform Nine and Three-Quarters?






The first thing you will need is a brick wall. I purchased this Brick Wall Backdrop 4ft. x 30ft. from Amazon. It worked great and I had plenty of left over plastic that I could've made an entrance to Diagon Alley as well. I did need to cut two pieces to make my wall since it is only 4 ft tall and I pinned one above the other. Sadly, I forgot to take a picture of just the wall and so here's a picture of the wall with the image of the Hogwarts train photoshopped on top to cover the rest of the image; the rest of the image being my friends taking silly photos.









A scarlet stream engine was waiting next to a platform packed with people. A sign overhead said Hogwarts Express, eleven o'clock. Harry looked behind him and saw a wrought-iron archway where the barrier had been, with the words Platform Nine and Three-Quarters on it. He had done it. (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, 93-94)


Next is the Platform 9 ¾ hanging sign. You will need:

  • Cardboard (just used any old box lying around)
  • Black, Rusty Red, and Golden Yellow paint
  • Hot glue
  • Xacto Knife 
  • 9 ¾ printout

  1. Size the above image to approximately 10 x 4 inches and print out twice. If you have a color printer, great; if not, you can paint the red background and the gold letters. 
  2. Cut out the following pieces of cardboard:
    • One 11 x 5 inch rectangle for the backing 
    • Two 11 x 5 inch rectangles with 9.5 x 3.5 inch cut out to create 0.75 inch frames
    • Two 10.5 x 0.75 inch strips
    • One 12 x 0.75 inch strip

  3. Center and glue the printouts to each side of the backing.
  4. Paint the frames gold and the strips black.
  5. Glue frames on each side of the sign.
  6. Paint edges of the sign gold.
  7. As evenly as possible, fold one of the short strips around the left edge of the sign and glue.
  8. Glue second short strip to the back of the first, making sure to leave 0.75 inch hanging below the end of the sign
  9. Take the long strip and curl one end as tight as you can.
  10. Glue the uncurled end of the long strip just below the top of the vertical short strip and glue the bottom part of the curl to the end of the fold short strip. 

I painted my sign red and gold and so I had the same gold to paint the frame. Obviously, I should've used a ruler to cut straight edges for the frames but I think it turned out pretty well, all things considered.

Place your photo booth props and some antique suitcases next to your wall and you've got yourself your very own Hogwarts Express Platform!

DIY Hogwarts Themed Party - Signs

Putting up signs around the event location is a great way to enhance the atmosphere of the party. Here are three signs that you can easily print out and display at your party. Simply copy and paste them into a word/pages document, size, center, and print out on cardstock. All images are in black and white so you can print out and color in any manner you see fit.



1. A sign for the the bathrooms:



To Harry's left and right came the sound of flushing. He crouched down and peered through the gap at the bottom of the cubicle, just in time to see a pari of booted feet climbing into the toilet nest door.
He looked left and saw Ron blinking a him.
"We have to flush ourselves in?" he whispered.
"Looks like it," Harry whispered back; his voice came out deep and gravelly.
They both stood up. Feeling exceptionally foolish, Harry clambered into the toilet.
He knew at once that he had done the right thing; though he appeared to be standing in water, his shoes, feet, and robes remained quite dry. He reached up, pulled the chain, and nest movement had zoomed down a short chute, emerging out of a fireplace into the Ministry of Magic. (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, 241)



2. A sign for the fireplace:


"Not now, Arthur," said Mrs. Weasley. "floo powder's a lot quicker, dear, but goodness me, if you've never used it before--"
"He'll be all right, Mum," said Fred. "Harry, watch us first."

 He took a pinch of glittering powder out of the flowerpot, stepped up to the fire, and threw the powder into the flames.
With a roar, the fire turned emerald green and rose higher than Fred, who stepped right into it, shouted, "Diagon Alley!" and vanished. (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, 47)

As you can see from the picture above, I colored the cork and the powder in the bottle after printing it out on cardstock.



3. A sign for an off limits area:  



"And finally, I must tell you that this year, the third-floor corridor on the right-had side is out of bounds to everyone who does to wish to die a very painful death."
Harry laughed, but he was one of the few who did. 
"He's not serious?" he muttered to Percy. 
"Must be," said Percy, frowning at Dumbledore. "It's odd, because he usually gives us a reason why we're not allowed to go somewhere --" (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, 127)



I colored this sign as well, but if you have access to a parchment type paper, it might be easier to print  on to that instead.

Monster Inc. Mike Wazowski Cross Stitch



Since I'm posting custom cross stitches I've designed, I've decided to post this one as well. If you like it be sure to check out my Etsy shop.

This is a design that I made for a co-worker's son. Konner really loves Monsters Inc. And Mike Wazowski was his favorite. Konner had gotten a Mike card and loved it so much that he would refuse to sleep without it. His dad (my co-worker) asked me to make something that Konner could sleep with instead of the card. It didn't take me long to create this design and stitch in up. I didn't have a sewing machine at the time so I had to stitch the pillow and the cross stitch design into the pillow by hand. Stitching free hand is a lot harder then stitching using Aida fabric. I totally forgot to take a picture of the finished project, so Konner's dad texted a picture of it. Sorry it's not the best as far as quality (you can barely make out Mike's horns) but you get the picture :)

Hello Kitty Christmas Cross Stitch

Last Christmas I made a bunch of cross stitched ornaments for my friends. One friend in particular really loved Hello Kitty. So I decided to make her a Christmas themed Hello Kitty ornament.
This was the result and it came out super cute! I really like this design but decided that I wasn't going to put for sale on my Etsy shop because it was too similar to other patterns out there. Instead I just decided to give it away for FREE! Pattern is below :) I hope you like it.

Game of Thrones - House Sigils Cross Stitch Patterns

Hi Everyone! I am very pleased to announce that I have finished with my latest patterns! I've been working on these for a few months now and I hope you all like them.

 I think it would be a really cool design to put the four patterns together in kinda of a diamond pattern like the one on the right. And then make a large cross stitch to put on a pillow.
This is the Baratheon Stag Sigil with Crowns
When I started making these patterns I wanted to make them all consistent. So I only did the heads of each of the animals. The antlers on the stag were extremely difficult to design. And I probably should've use a darker yellow because you can barely read the motto. The crowns along the top are of course there because the "Baratheons" are the ruling family of Westeros. 

This is the Lannister Lion Sigil with Coins
 I wish that the Lannister and Baratheon colors weren't so similar. I wish one of them was green. But that is out of my control. I wanted a symbol that represented each of the houses. The obvious choice for the Lannisters was gold. I looked up Westeros coins and found a seven pointed star coin that I thought would look quite nice. I did try doing faces on the coins but the area was just too small to make it look right. I don't really think you can tell the coins are coins but the stars look cool enough on their own that it doesn't matter if you don't realize they are suppose to be coins. 

This is the Stark Dire Wolf Sigil with Swords
 This pattern is definitely the most recognizable of all the sigil patterns. I did add an ear to the outline of the wolf's head because without it I didn't think it looked much like a wolf. Usually a wolf's ears are up, by adding the ear in a downwards position, you can tell the wolf is growling. I also used the swords at the top because they are suppose to represent the Stark family sword Ice. 

This is the Three-Headed Targaryen Sigil with Dragon Eggs
This is probably my favorite of these patterns. Again, to keep the patterns consistent, I only did the head of the dragon. The three dragon eggs (not pinecones) at the top are suppose to represent the three eggs Daenerys received at her wedding. I was toying with the idea to make them the same colors as in the book (green, cream, and black); but I decided against it because I wanted to stay with the two thread colors for each pattern.
